Does red light actually regrow hair?
For pattern hair loss, low-level red light has real trial evidence for thicker, denser hair over months. It does not revive follicles that are gone.
Hair is one of the better-supported uses of red light. It is also one of the most oversold, so the honest version matters.
What the trials show
Low-level light around 650 nm applied to the scalp several times a week for 16 to 26 weeks increased hair density in androgenetic alopecia in multiple controlled trials. The devices in those trials were caps and combs with many diodes and defined output.
It works on follicles that are miniaturising, not on smooth scalp where follicles have closed. Earlier is better.
Combs, caps and massagers
A red-light massage comb delivers light to a small area at a time and adds mechanical stimulation that feels good and increases blood flow. A cap covers the whole scalp at once. For a receding hairline a comb is workable; for diffuse thinning a cap is the honest choice.

Straight answers
Is scalp massage alone enough?
Small studies show a few minutes of daily massage increases hair thickness a little over months. It costs nothing, so do it. It will not match red light plus minoxidil.
Can I use it with minoxidil or finasteride?
Yes, and combined use is what most trials and dermatologists recommend. Light is an addition, not a replacement.
How long before I know?
Six months, with photographs in the same light. Shedding can increase in the first weeks; that is old hairs making way, not a failure.
